ID-100195066Running a business requires the use of myriad types of software. There is bookkeeping, anti-virus, data protection, project management and email to name a few. There is certainly no shortage of vendors out there offering the exact products you need. So, for most businesses, the issue is not finding the program that provides the solution they seek, but finding the right program from the right vendor. Here are some helpful hints for making this important decision.

What Do You Really Need?

The answer to this question may seem a bit obvious. The very fact that you are looking to purchase a particular type of software clearly means you need it, but similar programs offer different features. One may provide more than you need or not enough. One program may be better suited for different types of industries. Before you make a purchase, it is important to clarify exactly what you need in a particular piece of software and what goals you hope to achieve. The more clearly you define your requirements, the greater the chance you will find the software that best meets your needs.

Evaluate Credentials and Certificates

Before you jump into a relationship with a particular vendor, do some research on their credentials and certification. How long has this vendor been in business? Are they growing or scaling back? Check for partner certifications related to the solutions you are currently seeking out. Is there an engineering team that is working on product development?

Check References

This is one of those oft-mentioned tips when it comes to choosing providers of these products and services. One of the most important pieces of advice, but not often heeded. A vendor seems reliable just go with it. Many times, it works out just fine, but often times it does not. Had you did a bit of digging and reached out to current customers, you may have gleaned important information that indicated this may not be the best match for your needs. When it comes to evaluating software vendors, not only do you want to reach out to current customers, you want to find customers that are specifically within your industry in order to make the most accurate assessment. Find out how long they have been a client. How well has the vendor met the needs specific to their industry? How would they rate their customer service experience? Plenty of sites are available online where you can check out reviews. Take note of negative comments to get an idea of issues that may need to be discussed with the vendor.

Scalability

When it comes to making a purchase such as software, consider your immediate needs as well as those in the future. Evaluate software vendors not only on what the programs can provide for you now, but whether they can provide solutions should your business grow. Doing this can ensure that you will not have to reevaluate programs a few years later.
